Not sure where to put this, but since this is the de facto 'someone famous died' thread...... Andrew Breitbart is dead.  43 years old with a wife and four children.  Sad.

This makes me real sad.  Lost a good one.

Adam Yauch, a member of the seminal hip-hop trio the Beastie Boys, has died. He was 47 years old.

The Brooklyn-born musician known to fans as MCA was first treated for a cancerous growths in his parotid gland and a lymph node in 2009 and subsequently underwent surgery and radiation therapy, which forced the delay of the Beastie Boys’ most recent album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. His illness has also kept the group off the road, and Yauch missed the group’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two weeks ago.

I generally hated disco (I remember when I first spotted a "Disco Sucks" button--I think it was about 1980 on a teenager in New York. Although looking back, compared to some of the garbage out today, it was like a golden age of music--lol), but Donna Summer's music--specific songs, anyway--seemed to transcend the genre and she was such an excellent singer. I think "On the Radio" was the theme song for a teen movie called "Foxes" with Jodie Foster. Does anyone remember that?!

I didn't either and I wish it were that way for all celebrities who are ill. The depression induced by seeing yourself on the cover of tabloids and newspapers everywhere you go, stating "Doctors say [celebrity Y] has 12 days left to live!" is bound to shut that person's immune system down like no other and actually cause an earlier death. Look at Patrick Swayze and what he had to deal with from the press at a horrible time in his life. Bob Marley's old publicist tried to cover up all the details about his illness from The Press, for that very reason. So at least he could get the most out of each day he did live. I always wonder though, since he was Rastafarian and didn't believe in Western medicine, if he could have been cured.

Sorry to hear of her passing. I liked some of her pre-1980 stuff, including I Feel Love (THAT was a high-tech sound!), On The Radio and MacArthur Park. I didn't care for Hot Stuff though and her post-1980 tunes. She seemed to lose her "edge" after she got religion. Every time I hear MacArthur Park, it reminds me of waiting in line at the Hudson Haunted House in October 1978. They played a radio over loudspeakers for all the people waiting in line! On The Radio reminds me of skiing with my middle school ski team at Brandywine in January 1980.

So that's two divas dead in 2012 (three if you include Vidal Sasoon).

To show you what an innovator she was, Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" came out in 1977.....

✿ DONNA SUMMER - I Feel Love (1977) ✿

....When the most cutting-edge music was otherwise emerging from Europe with groups like Kraftwerk. But that was still too "out there" for mainstream America radio stations to play -- yet. We were still 3-5 years away from being ready for European techno like this....

Kraftwerk - Trans europe express

But Donna Summer found a way to introduce and sell this sound to American audiences waaay before it's time.

Why would someone with a voice like that even pick up a cigarette? It blows me away when people with a great talent do  the exact kind of actions/behaviors that destroy their talent or their ability to express it.

I saw it in this CNN article:

"Donna Summer died of lung cancer, but the singer wasn't a smoker, and the cancer wasn't related to smoking, her family's representative said Friday."
http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/18/showbiz/donna-summer-dead/index.html?iref=allsearch

I haven't read more than a few lines past any headline about her death, though, so you surely have more info than me.

Katie Holmes lands role in Broadway play, ‘Dead Accounts’

As she goes through her divorce, Katie Holmes is going back to work on Broadway.

The 33-year-old actress will star in Theresa Rebeck’s play “Dead Accounts,” a contemporary family comedy set in Cincinnati.

Holmes, who made her Broadway debut in 2008 in Arthur Miller’s drama “All My Sons,” will play Lorna, a single woman with a history of bad relationships who’s living with her aging parents.

She collides with her brother, a banker with his own issues, who returns to Ohio from New York City.

Sylvia Woods, Soul-Food Restaurateur, Is Dead at 86
By MARGALIT FOX
Published: July 19, 2012 56 Comments

Sylvia Woods, whose eponymous Harlem soul-food restaurant was frequented by local and national politicians, international celebrities, tourists, epicures and ordinary neighborhood residents, died on Thursday at her home in Westchester County, N.Y. She was 86.

Her family announced the death, citing no cause. Its statement said Ms. Woods had been ill with Alzheimer’s disease for the last few years.

Her death came a few hours before she was to receive an award from Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a reception at Gracie Mansion commemorating the 50th anniversary of Sylvia’s Restaurant. There was a moment of silence before the award presentation; a family friend accepted it on her behalf.

Randy Travis arrested naked, charged with DWI
By DIANA HEIDGERD, Associated Press – 1 hour ago

DALLAS (AP) — Country singer Randy Travis was charged with driving while intoxicated and threatening law officers after he crashed his Pontiac Trans Am and was found naked and combative at the scene, Texas officials said.

The accident was reported Tuesday night, and Travis walked out of jail Wednesday morning wearing scrubs, no shoes and a University of Texas baseball cap. It was the second Texas arrest this year for Travis, who was cited in February for public intoxication.

A Pontiac Trans Am registered to the 53-year-old singer had veered off a roadway near Tioga, a town about 60 miles north of Dallas where the entertainer lives, and struck several barricades in a construction zone, said Tom Vinger, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Native Ohioan Phyllis Diller Dies

PHYLLIS DILLER | 1917-2012
Laughs Were on Her, by Design
By RICHARD SEVERO and PETER KEEPNEWS
Published: August 20, 2012

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/21/arts/television/phyllis-diller-sassy-comedian-dies-at-95.html?pagewanted=all

Phyllis Diller, whose sassy, screeching, rapid-fire stand-up comedy helped open the door for two generations of funny women, died on Monday at her home in the  Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. She was 95.

Her agent, Fred Wostbrock, confirmed her death.

Ms. Diller, who became famous for telling jokes that mocked her odd looks, her aversion to housekeeping and a husband she called Fang, was far from the first woman to do stand-up comedy. But she was one of the most influential. There were precious few women before her, if any, who could dispense one-liners with such machine-gun precision or overpower an audience with such an outrageous personality.
